Brabazon: Planning Applications and Approvals

Building Brabazon: The story so far

For more than a century, the historic former Filton Airfield has been recognised for creativity, design, and the creative spirit that changed the world.

Now this historic local landmark is being transformed into Brabazon, a thriving new neighbourhood for Bristol, designed to live up to that legacy.

Brabazon today

Outline planning consent was granted in 2018 to transform the former Airfield into Brabazon. In 2020, detailed planning consent was also received to reimagine the historic Brabazon Hangars into a supersonic new 17,000-capacity Arena for Bristol.

Today, residents are already living at The Hangar District: the first phase of new homes at Brabazon.

Network Rail is awaiting final planning approval before construction begins on the new train station. When operational in 2023, the new station will connect Brabazon to Bristol Temple Meads in less than 15 minutes.

YTL Arena Bristol is scheduled to open its doors for the first time in 2024.

But the world has moved on...

The world has changed since 2018, when planning permission for Brabazon was first granted.

In Bristol and South Gloucestershire:

  • We face a housing crisis
  • We face a climate and ecological emergency
  • We have to build back better from the Covid-19 pandemic

Brabazon can do more

Brabazon is the largest area of brownfield land in the South West, when the region’s Green Belt is under unprecedented pressure.

It is located less than 5 miles from Bristol City Centre, next to existing rail, bus and cycle routes.

It is at the heart of Bristol’s world-class engineering and commercial cluster, which has driven local prosperity for over 100 years.

Yet at its current approved density, Brabazon would feel like a suburban rather than an urban location.

Brabazon could do much more.

It could have more homes for local people, create more jobs and opportunities, drive more investment in public transport. And it could do so more sustainably than anywhere else in the region.

But if Brabazon is to help the region tackle the challenges we face, YTL Developments needs to update our existing planning consent.

What happens next?

YTL Developments has submitted a revised Masterplan application to South Gloucestershire Council.

Read on to find out how Brabazon could do more to help build a more sustainable and more prosperous community in North Bristol.
